Data management is the practice of collecting, organizing, and storing data securely and cost-effectively.
At an enterprise-wide level, data is a strategic asset; proper stewardship is necessary to support the Navy's mission. Taking steps to store and share relevant data long-term will open new avenues of discovery and strategic decision-making.
On a personal level, proper data management will help streamline your research process by planning ahead and ensure that your work is accessible and usable both to yourself and to others, increasing your scholarly impact. If you take the time to preserve your data, your data may end up repurposed for all kinds of use!
The first step towards better management is the creation of a Data Management Plan (DMP). A DMP is a brief document that outlines how you plan to document, organize, and store your data during the research phase and once a project is completed. Your DMP will include information on how you will collect, organize, manage, store, secure, backup, preserve, and share your research data.
This guide explains the concept of data management and the research data lifecycle. It then takes you step-by-step through the process of creating a DMP, including best practices and examples. We also include additional resources on data management next steps.
